Muurame - a modern municipality in the Jyväskylä region centre of growth 

Modern and developing Muurame Municipality is well positioned with good transport connections and alongside highway 9/E 63. Jyväskylä Town is a 15 minute drive and the closest airport is a 40 minute drive.

Muurame is growing with a current population of over 9 000. It provides developed municipal services and a pleasant work and residential environment. In addition to basic services, the people of Muurame can practise a diversified range of leisure activities. Muurame is one part of the collection of Jyväskylä Town, The Rural Municipality of Jyväskylä, Laukaa and Uurainen, with a collective population of some 140 000, and it is a fast growing centre of education, employment and place of domicile.

Muurame is naturally located between two lakes named Lake Päijäne and Lake Muurat. Lake Muurat feeds into Lake Päijäne via River Muurame, which runs through the centre of Muurame. In addition to the centre of Muurame, residential areas are closely scattered around the centre and in small villages, as well as, sparsely populated areas. There are a variety of house types with detached houses comprising 55 % of the total. The population of Muurame is young with one in four inhabitants being under 14 years old and inhabitants over 65 years old account for some 10% of the total.

School, culture and physical exercise services are mainly practised in the Kulttuurikeskus (Centre of Culture), which was completed in 1990. Alongside this centre is Muurame Swimming Pool. Outdoor swimming is enjoyed from the various lake beaches in Muurame. The varying nature of Muurame provides excellent settings, as well as, water recreation and forest rambling. Muurame Heights boasts a network of excellent outdoor fitness tracks and illuminated cross country ski tracks. Cross country skiing is practised both in spring and winter. Ice skating is practised on various ice tracks and on the ice skating circuit at Kylänlahti (Village bay).

Recreational fishing is practised right in the heart of Muurame on the rapids of River Muurame. A nature trail winds its way alongside the river and provides an excellent opportunity for viewing the river wildlife and botany. Riihivuori Ski Resort can be seen from Muurame centre. The resort has suitable pistes to suit downhill skiers of all ages and skill levels. Muurame also boasts a quality golf course for lovers of golf.

For lovers of traditional culture the Sauna village is an admired attraction with museum saunas and basic exhibitions. For lovers of architecture Muurame Church is the work of the renowned architect Alvar Aalto and truly worth a visit. The church was completed in 1929.

Business services in the municipality are centrally handled by Jykes Oy, which is a business development organisation for the Jyväskylä Region. The largest enterprises in Muurame are internationally recognised, and these are the stove and sauna manufacturer Harvia Oy, Kytölä Oy Instrument factory, lubrication and seal system producer Safematic Oy, forest and agricultural machinery manufacturer Nokka-Tume, as well as, the designer and manufacturer of flexible production systems and ergonomic workstations Flex Link Automation Oy.
